Perler Beads

I absolutely LOVE Perler Beads.  Aren't they pretty?

And they're even prettier when they're organized.  This is the way Trevor likes them.  I hate that the greens go in two different containers and the whites are mixed in with some of the greens and yellows, but they're his beads and therefore his organizational system.

Perler Beads weren't around when I was a kid.  Too bad- I would have been obsessed with collecting and organizing the beads, then making cool designs.  I'm not sure if I would have actually melted any of them together, as that would have meant that I couldn't ever use those beads again.

Somehow, despite being totally into all things crafty, I didn't learn about Perler beads until I was a mom.  When Trevor was two and just starting Sunday School, his teacher had the class make these on a rainy November Sunday.

This was the first time I'd ever seen Perler beads.  So much fun!  Trevor loved them and wanted to make more designs, so we got some that same week.  Christmas was only a few weeks away, so we added them to his Christmas list and got a bunch more.  We started with the design suggestions on the package, but quickly moved on to our own designs and patterns.

We love the star shape.  You can create such different looks from the same template.

The other shapes are fun too.

It's also fun to use the basic square or hexagon shape to create other things.  I love this sweet little flower.

  2. Helpful hint: If you've got larger fingers or poor dexterity like me, using a pair of pointed tweezers makes working with the Perler beads much easier.

  3. Oh so cool! I haven't seen those beads since I was younger. I hated melting my designs together too because it meant I couldn't reuse them. LOL Very neat projects!
