Rescue is My Favorite Breed

I've blogged many times about the adventures of the beloved fourth member of our family, our rabbit Trouble. Trouble is a house rabbit; he has a large enclosure where he stays at night, but otherwise, he is free roaming, like a dog or cat. And just like a dog or cat would be, Trouble truly is a member of our family. We love him.

Trouble's mom was rescued from a filthy house with hundreds of rabbits. Trouble was born in foster care two days later. We adopted him from Contra Costa Rabbit Rescue when he was 8 months old. It's one of the best decisions we've ever made.

I'm embarrassed to say that before I knew anything about rabbits and we were considering one for Trevor, I started researching different breeds and looking into local breeders. I learned what traits were characteristic of different breeds. Fortunately, I also started looking into rabbit availability at shelters and pounds. I was horrified to see how many beautiful, loving rabbits needed a home. I hadn't had any idea that this was such a problem. Once I did, I knew that a rescue was the only choice for us. We browsed through the list of adoptable rabbits at CCRR and asked to meet three of them, including Trouble. They were all wonderful, but it was clear immediately that Trouble was the right bunny for us.

Contra Costa Rabbit Rescue is raising funds to help with the medical care of the rabbits awaiting their Forever Homes by selling these awesome t-shirts.

We are getting them for the three of us and I'd like to buy one for a lucky reader as well! If you currently have a rescued animal or have adopted one in the past, regardless of species, leave a comment letting me know the name and species. I'll pick a winner on Monday.

Speaking of Monday....

It's the start of the annual Bunny Week here at My Creative Life! Just like in past years, I'll be sharing a week's worth of bunny crafts, bunny information, and all things bunny. I'm really excited!

  1. we rescued our wonderful Nola (a mix breed dog- we suspect she is a Carolina Dingo) this past December. She is absolutely wonderful and from the minute we saw her she has been a member of our family. Our boys fell in love with her and she is truly wonderful. Rescueing her was a family decision that we all felt was the best thing and we are soooo happy that we did! We love our Nola!

  5. That is so awesome! :) I didn't know Trouble was a rescue rabbit! :) I'll be clicking the link for CCRR next, to read more about them - what a great organization!! My "Rescue Mom" status goes way back, but we currently have 3 dogs - Griffin, Junior & Gracie - all rescues. Both Junior & Gracie came from Rescue organizations in town, but Griffin came from a soldier in Georgia about to be deployed to Iraq. He got him as an 11-week-old puppy, and shortly thereafter got his orders, so he knew he had to find a home for him. We got him when he was just about 4 months. We've worked closely with several rescues, and it is both heartbreaking and the utmost rewarding. I applaud those that give their time and heart and hard work to rescue! :)

  8. Does Trouble's fur feel as luxurious as it looks? :-). My bunny Juniper was rescued from the House Rabbit Society in Richmond. Her predecessors, going way back in my life, have all been rescue buns directly from the streets or from shelters. I know no other breed!

    1. Yes, his fur is amazing. He's pillow-soft everywhere, but he has a patch under his ears that it like silk. We save the downy we comb out to leave for birds' nests. Every time we've found a nest in our yard, it's been lined with Trouble's fur.

  9. Over the past 36 years of our marriage we have rescued a few breeds. We now have Felix our beloved rescue cat. Felix was our first ever cat. He is 12 years old. We named him Felix because when we rescued him we had also had a dog - Oscar. Oscar and Felix were bust of buddies. Oscar has since passed away. Rescue IS the BEST breed indeed!

  10. I forgot to mention that we also had a rescue rabbit when our girls were growing up. He had the run of the house too except at night he slept in a crate in one of our daughters bedroom. Such good memories. I love hearing stories of Trouble!

  12. 3 cats, 1 rabbit and many guinea pigs (they can get pregnant within 8 hours of giving birth and the shelter didn't separate them fast enough).

  13. We have adopted and/or rescued Priscilla, Dusty, Sawyer, Boo, Cali, Austin and Dakota. All kitties and one dog (Dusty). We gave them a home, but they gave us so much more in return!

  14. I love that you got Trouble as a rescue! We love our rescue Molly... even if she eats the couch lol :)

  15. Sophie is a rescue dog. The family we got her from didn't want her anymore because their sons went to college and she was "their" dog. I will never understand it, but their loss is our gain!

  16. We rescued two dogs...and they gave us 2 puppies who were with us for about 15 years.

  17. My New Zealand White was a rescue. It's the only way to rabbit!
