Kidding Around: Summer Reading

We are a family of readers. We all love books and love to read. Trevor and I visit the library at least once a week, usually checking out a huge stack of books. We always check out audio books of children's classics for long car rides.

Our Kidding Around prompt was to write about some of the books we've read this summer. Trevor was torn. He wanted the page to have a list of ALL the books he'd read this month (several dozen), but he didn't want to do that much writing. I encouraged him to choose three. We put temporary adhesive on three index cards to attach to our journals, used Heidi Swapp alphabet masks to spell a title, and heavily misted the page with yellows and oranges. Trevor LOVES working with the mists and was so excited to peel away the mists and remove the index cards. He wrote about three books (Jay, Ninja of LightningCole, Ninja of Earth; and Tigers at Twilight)  and used a highlighter on the titles.

I struggled with picking three books too! I've read a lot of wonderful books so far this summer and didn't want to leave any out! Unlike Trevor, I don't mind doing a lot of writing, but he wanted me to write about three just like he did. I chose the most recent three I'd finished. The first was Cheryl Strayed's memoir Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail. Next was Maxx Comedy by my favorite children's author, Gordon Korman. The third was book 18 in the My Weird School series (which Trevor and I both love) called Mrs. Yonkers Is Bonkers!

What great books have you read this summer? I'm always looking for recommendations!

  1. How fun!! I have read about 30 books this summer (I usually read a book in about 2 days) ... but I think my fave is the one I talked about this weekend on my bloggy - "The Dog Lived and So Will I"

  2. I too love to read. It was one thing I was happy to get back to when retired. I read to my Granddaughter constantly. No titles to suggest but I think your project is fun.

  3. I love reading and have been reading so much lately! Thankfully I have been able to find the time again! The last 3 books I read were: "Reinventing Claire", "Dolls Behaving Badly" and "Out of My Mind". Next on my list: "Women on the Edge of a Nervous Breakthrough". (All books are fiction)
Love the misted index cards on your layouts!

  5. I love the way you celebrate reading with Trevor. The masks and mists are great ideas for the journal. Cory would think the masking was kind of like magic. I will have to show him that with his name. He'll love it. We read every day. We read a lot of things over and over, but that's OK.

I read a lot as well and usually have a book at my bedside. I read Wild earlier this year and liked it too. Another memoir I read this year and loved was: King of the Hill by A. E. Hotchner. It's the story of Hotchner as a determined and resilient kid in St. Louis during the Depression. Oh, how I rooted for him. He's a great story-teller. I laughed out loud in places. Amazing story.

  6. Reading is awesome!!! We have quiet reading time every day during the Summer. I believe in setting a good example so I read during quiet reading time too. Then I get sucked in and keep reading for longer. LOL I love the masking! These books are going to be awesome when you are finished!

  8. First, love the technique you used for this page with the mists!! But more importantly, love the reading!! :) I definitely want to read WILD... you know it's on my list ;) I would highly recommend you read Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell. It really challenges you to think outside the box and I think you would like it!! :)
