Journaling about Older Photos

I've been unearthing a lot of old treasures recently, including pictures from when Steve and I were first dating.  I scrapped before we met (2002) and after we married (2004), but I stopped scrapping during the year we were dating and the year we were engaged.  I'd like to go back and get those pictures in albums.  I started with our first Halloween together.

I had so much fun cropping and arranging the pictures, choosing papers, and selecting embellishments!  It all came together so quickly and easily... until I got to the journaling.  I really struggled with what to say.  Do I write from the perspective of 10 years later?  Or, do I write what I would have written back in 2002?

It's tricky.  In 10 years, a lot has changed.  Steve and I got married, as did one other couple from the photos.  The only couple in the pictures that was married at the time have since divorced, and two other couples have separated.  Two friends have moved far away.  None of us get together for Halloween anymore.  In the end, I decided to keep my journaling fairly general, mentioning who was there and how much fun we had together.

As I scrap the rest of the pictures from 2002-2004, I'm sure I'll face this issue again and again.  I'd love to hear how all of you journal about older photos!

  1. I haven't really thought about that... I think I just try and journal what I can remember about the event, the photo(s) that I am scrapping! LOL!! I loveeeeeeeee this one!! LOVING all the photos!!!

  2. I think you did great! Sometimes even on current layouts, I really don't have much to say - title, date, maybe a line or two - so I wouldn't feel like I *had* to write too much journaling. One exception, would be if you were doing a 'then and now' type of layout ... you could journal more about how relationships changed over the 10 years ... Great job! :)

  3. I do a lot of scrappin' with older pictures. I do a combination of things. Sometimes I just put the facts, who, when, where etc. other times I put the facts and then add some general journaling about the event itself. Occasionally, I like to journal from the "now" and reflect about what has changed since these pictures were taken.
I love how the layout turned out. I always enjoy how many pictures you include :)

  4. I think it's awesome that you have all these pics from 10 years ago AND that you remember who all of them are! Super cute page. I like the little photo tabs with each pic that identifies who they are. I haven't often scrapped pics that old but I have occasionally said on the page: "Photos taken 2005; journaled 2012." That way, I know my journaling was in the perspective of 7 years later.

  5. I had this vision that even though I wasn't up there anymore, that you guys still got together for Halloween. Makes me sad :(.

    1. Yeah, it is a little sad. We continued to get together until 2005, the year I was pregnant. (I actually announced my pregnancy to friends for the first time at our house on Halloween.) The next year, we had a newborn, Ronan was old enough to want to go trick-or-treating with friends in his own neighborhood, and most of the others made different plans. Now it's all about Trevor and what he wants to do for Halloween. Which is all good. :)

  6. Hi Cindy. Fun layout.. I journal older pics with a voice of today writing my memories of that time; and then at the bottom or somewhere on the layout put something like "created (date)", or "journaled 2012".

  7. Love the fun pics.
I would journal about then (2002) and then a little about now (2012).
